Darrell Steinberg will be sworn in as the mayor of Sacramento Dec. 13 while the city celebrates major milestones and struggles with ongoing problems. The Golden 1 Center is open for business and may be delivering so far on its promise of entertainment and economic activity downtown. The farm-to-fork movement continues to build, and development in the railyards is finally picking up the pace. But the mood of the Sacramento electorate isn’t all positive. Voters rejected two local ballot measures on Nov. 8 that Steinberg backed: a sales tax increase to fund transportation projects and a parcel tax to pay for school services. At the same time, voters approved a measure to have an independent commission draw district boundaries for city council elections. Sacramento leaders continues to grapple with a significant homeless population as they try to finance expansion and renovations at the convention center and Community Center Theater, among other challenges. What does Steinberg see as his mandate, and how will he apply his experience and skills from his time in the Legislature to governing Sacramento? Join the Sacramento Press Club Dec. 7 as we welcome former California Senate President Pro Tempore and current Sacramento Mayor-Elect Darrell Steinberg as our luncheon speaker.
