Speaker Anthony Rendon took over the Assembly chamber this month with a unique leadership approach: He’s pledging to let members of his caucus take the credit and push through their own legislation for his first year at the helm. Rendon can afford to spend a little time getting accustomed to his new role, as the first Assembly Speaker since voters agreed to extend term limits to 12 years, he could be in the post for a while. Rendon first drew widespread attention for authoring Proposition 1, the $7.5 billion state water bond that voters approved in 2014.
But he also has pledged to pursue an unabashedly liberal agenda focusing on funding for education and social service programs. Prior to serving in the Assembly, Rendon directed a Head Start program, headed the California League of Conservation Voters and taught in the Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice at California State University, Fullerton.
